7 Secrets to Succeeding in College
Here are 7 ways for you to succeed in college - no matter what type of student you were in high school.
1. Visit your instructors during office hours.
Take the time to get to know your professor during office hours. Visit them several times during the semester to get clarification on any assignments. Professors rarely get students visiting them, so you'll stand out as someone who is serious about school.
2. Get to know your college librarian(s).
Your college librarian can help you save many hours researching. Make friends with him or her to get tips and advice on finding reference material for your papers.
3. Join a productive study group.
Find serious students in your class and find out if they want to start a study group. Study groups are a key to getting help from fellow students - and the members will keep you motivated to study.
4. Create goals for yourself.
Make a list of goals that you want to accomplish each semester. Include goals about how much time you'll study each week. Also allow yourself some flexibility for those "crazy" weeks when you can't get all your studying done.
5. Eat healthy.
The busier you are during the day, the more important it is for you to eat healthy meals. By eating healthy, you'll allow your body to fight off sicknesses easier and allow your mind to work to its full potential. Eating greasy foods will make you feel sluggish and tired - which isn't good when you need to stay awake during study sessions. And make sure to drink plenty of water.
6. Get exercise.
Part of your goals should be to exercise regularly. This is something you should consider to be a daily homework assignment. Exercise will help you focus better in class, and will help you feel better. There's always an excuse on why you shouldn't exercise, but you need to force yourself to just find time. Take a brisk walk during your lunch break, or wake up early for a morning job. Whatever you decide, just stick with it.
7. Get help when you need it.
Every college student goes through times when they can't finish all their homework. It's just a part of life. When those times come, make sure to communicate with your teacher. Keep your instructor informed on what's going on in your life so that they can possibly create a unique makeup assignment -- or allow you more time to get the work done. Just make sure to communicate to them. And know that it's alright to fall behind sometimes.
