No two people in the world will study alike, and there’s little doubt that what woks for one person may not work as well for another. However, there are some general techniques that should work well, no matter what your present study habits are.
Your success in school will depend on your ability to study effectively and efficiently. And, effective study skills have to be practiced in order for them to improve over time. You just can’t "think" about studying. It's something you have to actually plan for and do.
Remember, "practice doesn't make perfect; it's perfect practice that makes something perfect."
Here are some guidelines to follow:
1. Create a schedule
It will be nearly impossible to study effectively without developing a schedule. All the possible successes that can follow will largely depend on this one thing.
2. Make your time count
Your schedule should take into account every class or social event you might have. Learn to use your free time wisely by blocking off your day into one-hour increments. And, leave room in your schedule for revision.
3. Make a schedule that can be revised
Sticking to a rigid schedule that doesn't yield results is almost as bad as not having a schedule at tall. Plan your time wisely, and keep in mind your schedule will need to change as your priorities are altered.
4. Developing thinking skills
Everyone has thinking skills, unless there is something in life that seriously impairs the ability to think clearly. However, it's a fact that most people don't display a great deal of wisdom in their day to day thinking processes.
A good thinker is able to see "possibilities" in things where others are only able to see dead ends. Critical thinking allows a person to access the "intuitive" thought process more readily.
5. How to read material
You'll have to learn that reading just to read is different than reading with a clear purpose in mind. Think of what you're trying to accomplish in your reading assignments, and then read accordingly.
6. Take awesome notes
Note taking is much like reading in that it's a skill that has to be learned. Taking good notes allows you to revisit the material for greater effective study time.
