If so, you’re not alone—at least according to a survey recently conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Carpenter Co., a bedding products manufacturer. (Good bedding = Good dreaming. Get it?)
Here are some of the most interesting survey results:
- Despite the current recession, 77% of Americans say they still have big dreams for themselves.
- Of those surveyed, 42% say that, instead of causing them to retreat, the recession has made them “more determined” (25% much more determined, 16% just slightly more) to achieve their dreams compared to 12 months ago.
- More than eight in 10 (83%) describe themselves as someone who “looks ahead to the future and dreams about realizing goals and ideas.” Those dreams include:
- Improving the lives of their family (45%)
- Contributing to a better world (18%)
- Moving their career forward (14%)
- Staying in good health (10%)
- Getting a better education (9%)
Although much has been written recently about America’s need to “lower expectations,” 78% of survey respondents said they are able to dream as big as their parents did. Even so, 52% believe it will be “harder” for today’s children to achieve their life goals than it was for them.

As many survey respondents noted, the first step in achieving your dreams can be furthering your education.
