What is Reflexology?

ReflexologyReflexology is a therapeutic technique offered at many massage facilities. It involves using the thumb and fingers to apply pressure to specific areas of the feet, hands and sometimes the ears to promote health and overall well-being.

Although people who specialize in this craft are quick to point out that reflexology and massage are two wholly different disciplines, the two are closely enough related so that they can be easily combined in a single massage session by a well-trained therapist.

So what exactly is reflexology, where does it come from and what are its benefits? Here is some background on this increasingly popular therapy.

History

Modern Reflexology grew from the early 20th century practice of “Zone Therapy,” itself based on practices that have been around in one form or another for millennia. Tomb art in ancient Egypt (2330 B.C.) depicts physicians practicing reflexology on their male patients. Other archeological evidence reveals reflexology being used in China as far back as 2704 B.C. and Japan in the 7th century A.D. There is also strong evidence that a form of reflexology was practiced by the Indians of North America as well as the Incas of Peru.

Zone Therapy was introduced to the United States by Dr. William H. Fitzgerald in 1917. Fitzgerald believed the body was divided into several vertical zones whose functions could be affected by manipulation of the hands and feet. Dr. Fitzgerald’s work was expanded on by Dr. Shelby Riley, and developed further in the 1930s by Eunice Ingham. Ingham built upon Fitzgerald and Riley’s work to develop the current form of reflexology. Her charts are still in use today.

The Essentials of Reflexology

Reflexologists map the body’s organs and systems, all of which are linked to specific zones on the bottoms of the feet, hands and ears. Based on these zones, Reflexologists work key reflex points on these extremities to stimulate the nervous reflex actions to affect the corresponding body part. They may also integrate other modalities of massage and bodywork like Eastern and Meridian Theories to enhance the reflexology’s effects.

Reflexology can affect the body physically, emotionally and spiritually. It can create a greater awareness of the body and its healing processes. Its goal is to aid in balancing the body and help maintain homeostasis.
