The 10 Fastest-Growing Career Fields

Fast-Growing CareersWhat are America’s 10 fastest-growing careers? They’re all in the service sector, according to, 100-Fastest Growing Careers, a new book published by JIST Works. The book by Michael Farr essentially digests online data available (for free) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics’ (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011 Edition.[1] Included in the 402-page book are breakdowns of the top 100 career fields as defined by BLS projections of percentage growth between 2008 and 2018, as well as descriptions and income statistics for each job category.

According to Farr, the BLS’ top 10 fastest-growing career fields are:

1. Home health aides and personal and home care aides: 48%, 103,050 jobs
2. Dental assistants: 36%, 16,100 jobs
3. Medical assistants: 34%, 21,780 jobs
4. Computer network, systems, and database engineers: 30%, 46,080 jobs
5. Pharmacy technicians and aides: 25%, 18,810 jobs
6. Management analysts: 24%, 30,650 jobs
7. Registered nurses: 22%, 103,900 jobs
8. Accountants and auditors: 22%, 49,750 jobs
9. Human resources, training and labor relations managers and specialists: 22%, 49,750 jobs
10. Computer software engineers and computer programmers, 21%: 45,210 jobs

Virtually all of these jobs require a college degree that includes special technical training to qualify for entry-level employment.

Training for many of these positions is available right now at Everest College, University and Institute campuses across the United States.
