- Interviewing skills. Medical insurance billing and coding often involves speaking directly to patients and obtaining personal information. This is not always as straight-forward as you may think. Patients may be flustered, distracted or defensive. They may also be reluctant to hand over personal information, even though such information is needed to process their claims. A good medical insurance billing and coding specialist needs good "people skills" to smoothly obtain needed information.
- Record management. As a medical insurance billing and coding specialist, you will be expected to create and manage perhaps hundreds of patient records, either physically, electronically or both. Good organizational skills are a must!
- Keyboard and computer skills. Most medical insurance billing and coding is now done electronically. Good keyboarding skills are a necessity, as is general familiarity with computers and computer operations.
