Preparing Medical Insurance Claims Requires Multiple Skills

Medical Insurance Billing and CodingPreparing medical insurance claim forms is far more complicated than many people suspect. In fact, it's such a specialized field, it even has its own name: medical insurance billing and coding. People who choose medical insurance billing and coding as a career usually take college-level courses to get the technical background and training they need to compete for jobs in this challenging field. Usually, they also find that even the mastery of the medical coding system is not, by itself, enough to succeed; the field requires well-developed personal skills as well as technical ones.

Following are the various skills it takes to succeed as a professional medical insurance billing and coding specialist:

  • A thorough knowledge of medical terminology. To professionally process insurance claims, you need to know — and be able to spell — names for a broad range of diseases, conditions, procedures, etc. You also need to know what these terms mean and how to use them properly.
  • A thorough knowledge of insurance codes. To more efficiently process claims, the insurance industry has established a set of codes for all common diseases, conditions, procedures and medications. As a medical insurance billing and coding specialist, you will need to know the most common codes — and how to find the ones you don't.
  • Interviewing skills. Medical insurance billing and coding often involves speaking directly to patients and obtaining personal information. This is not always as straight-forward as you may think. Patients may be flustered, distracted or defensive. They may also be reluctant to hand over personal information, even though such information is needed to process their claims. A good medical insurance billing and coding specialist needs good "people skills" to smoothly obtain needed information.
  • Record management. As a medical insurance billing and coding specialist, you will be expected to create and manage perhaps hundreds of patient records, either physically, electronically or both. Good organizational skills are a must!
  • Keyboard and computer skills. Most medical insurance billing and coding is now done electronically. Good keyboarding skills are a necessity, as is general familiarity with computers and computer operations.
