Today’s Electricians do More than Just Keep the Lights On.

ElectricianIn most people’s minds, an electrician’s job consists mostly of installing light fixtures and electrical sockets. While “keeping the lights on” is certainly part of an electrician’s job, the 21st century electrician has responsibilities that can range everywhere from maintaining complex weather-control systems to installing high-tech surveillance networks. With homes, office buildings and even automobiles becoming increasingly dependent on electricity, the electrician career field looks bright indeed.

What Electricians Do

Depending on his/her training, experience and specialty, an electrician may be called upon to work on a range of projects that can include:

  • Commercial, industrial or residential electrical power systems
  • Commercial, industrial or residential security/alarm systems
  • Commercial, industrial or residential telephone systems
  • Commercial or industrial computer networking systems
  • Industrial motors

The recent introduction of all-electric automobiles and their need for convenient charging stations is expected to significantly increase electrician demand even further in the decade ahead. Job prospects are also expected to be good for an electrician with the widest range of skills, including voice, data and video wiring, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.*
