Accountants Have a Wide Range of Career Options

AccountantPeople with a degree in accounting have many options when it comes to choosing a career. With a bachelor’s degree in accounting, you can apply for positions in bookkeeping, payroll or accounts receivable. With some experience under your belt, you might want to study to become a certified public accountant (CPA), which can open yet another range of career options.

But even with just your bachelor’s degree in accounting, you may be able to qualify for entry-level jobs in a number of related fields, including:

Cost Estimator — This is someone who estimates costs for product manufacturing, construction projects or services to help management when setting prices or making bids.

Auditor — A person who studies accounting records to determine how well a particular company or enterprise is doing financially.

Budget Analyst — Someone who specializes in examining budget estimates for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with procedures and regulations.

Credit Analyst — This is someone who looks at the financial history of a person or business to determine the level of risk when issuing a loan.

Tax Examiner, Collector or Revenue Agent — Generally an employee of a government entity (local, state or federal) who determines how much a citizen or business owes in taxes and then goes about collecting these sums for the public coffers.

Tax Preparer — A specialist who helps individuals, couples or businesses prepare and submit their quarterly or annual tax returns.

Billing, Cost and Rate Clerk — This is someone who computes charges and fees for goods and services, and then prepares invoices to submit to customers or clients.

Accounting Clerk — Generally the employee of a financial institution who prepares account statements and answers questions about them for the institution’s customers/clients.

This is not a complete list. Accounting skills are needed at nearly every level in virtually every industry. Earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting can open many doors even in the toughest of economies, giving you options available to few other specialists.*
