The Personal Skills It Takes to Be a Professional Paralegal

ParalegalIt’s no surprise that paralegals need a basic understanding of the law to do their jobs. But in addition to training in contracts, wills, criminal law and similar subjects, paralegals also need to bring important personal skills to the workplace if they are to succeed. These skills include:

• Active Listening. Paralegals must be able to take direction verbally, understand the intentions of the speaker and be able to ask for further information when instructions are incomplete.

• Reading Comprehension. Paralegals not only have to be able to understand written instructions, but they must also be able to read and understand often complex legal documents.

• Expressive Writing. Paralegals need to be able to express their thoughts clearly in writing. An important part of a paralegal’s job is to organize thoughts and put them on paper in ways other people can easily understand.

• Expressive Speaking. Paralegals also need to be able to speak clearly and persuasively.

• Research. Paralegals are often required to research legal issues to find earlier cases and judicial decisions that could impact their current cases. They must know not only how to use the Internet and specialized search engines, but also use strategies for finding the information they’re looking for.

Time Management. Paralegals often have a lot of work they have to complete in a limited amount of time. They need to be able to prioritize assignments and work efficiently in the time they have.
