Carpentry Offers Low-Tech Growth in High-Tech Economy

CarpenterCarpentry is a profession that is many centuries old. Yet, it remains a viable — and vital — profession, one that offers an unusually high degree of potential growth even in today’s technology-driven economy.

In Texas, the demand for skilled carpenters is especially high, according to O*NET Online, the Web-based occupational resource sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. According to the site (and Texas Wage Information), job opportunities for carpenters in the Lone Star State is projected to increase 16 percent between 2008 and 2018, the most recent period for which projections are available. This is a full three percentage points higher than then 13 percent expansion the Labor Department foresees for the nation as a whole.*
