Having on-the-job experience is a teacher’s most valuable asset, according to a recent survey by Everest Institute’s Michigan campuses. Nearly eight of 10 respondents — 78 percent — said that having worked in the “real world” is likely to make someone an effective teacher.
According to the survey, other important teacher attributes are:
- Having an academic degree (71 percent)
- Number of years teaching (55 percent)
- Having professional/business connections to share with students (40 percent)
As far as classroom structure and organization, the survey respondents cited the following:
- Hands-on training (88 percent)
- Small discussion-focused classrooms (79 percent)
- Externships, internships or similar short-term work programs (75 percent)
- Private tutoring (73 percent)
Everest Institute polled 500 Michigan adults, ages 18-44. Of the respondents, 22 percent were current students while 78 percent were not. The online survey was conducted in December 2011.
