One or more of these mistakes may be the cause for not landing a job.

You may have better job search results if you avoid the following:

  •  Emailing a Word Document to an Employer — Formatting issues can occur when emailing a Word document. It’s possible that some type of virus may prevent your document from opening on the employer’s computer. It’s best to send a PDF version to avoid potential problems. Most printer software will have PDF capabilities. Look for “Save as PDF” or similar options when printing.
  • Sending a List of References — It’s good to have solid references, but you may want to avoid putting them on your resume unless asked to do so. One school of thought is that references belong at a later stage in the job search. Keep your contact references handy just in case.
  • Omitting Important Keywords from Your Resume — Resumes submitted to companies may end up in a huge database with thousands of other resumes. Many employers use a resume tracking system to find people with desirable skills and experience. Your resume should contain a variety of keyword phrases that are relevant to your career and skills.
  • Failing to Give Your Resume a Unique Look — A regular resume template may cause it to look like everyone else’s. Give your resume its own unique look and feel.
  • Listing Important Skills at the Bottom of Your Resume — It’s a good practice to list yours skills at the top of your resume. Make your resume easy to read at a glance by highlighting your skills with bullet points.
  • Failing to Mention Your Accomplishments — It’s good to mention your past job duties, but it’s also important to focus on your accomplishments. Your accomplishments may help make your resume more interesting and appealing.
  • Failing to Let Your Resume Tell Your Story — You have a story to tell and a lot to offer the world. Make sure your strengths are highlighted and your goals are clear.  Keep your focus on the job you’d like to land and the career you’d like to pursue.\
